Mark Leiter Jr. Pitches for his Father’s Team

Mark Leiter Jr. got his first major-league win with the Philadelphia Phillies on June 23, joining his father as the 15th father-son combination to start for the same team, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Mark was drafted by the Phillies in the 22nd round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Mark Sr. pitched two seasons with the Phillies in 1997 and 1998, when he led the National League in losing decisions (17) by a pitcher.  Overall, he pitched for 11 seasons with eight different clubs.

Mark Jr.’s uncle, Al Leiter, won 162 major-league games, while winning World Series championships with Toronto in 1993 and Florida in 1997.

Mark Leiter’s Son Gets Big-League Promotion

Mark Leiter Jr. was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies on April 18 from their Triple-A affiliate Lehigh Valley.  He is in his fifth pro season after being selected by the Phillies in the 22nd round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Mark Jr. is the son of former major-league pitcher Mark Leiter Sr. and the nephew of former major-league pitcher Al Leiter.

Mark Sr. pitched for eleven seasons in the majors, with eight different teams.  For his career, he posted a 65-73 record with a 4.57 ERA and 892 strikeouts in 335 appearances.

Al Leiter won 162 career games and played for two World Series championship teams, Toronto in 1993 and Florida in 1997.

Mark Leiter Jr. Looks to Father for Advice

In only his third year of pro baseball, Mark Leiter Jr. was recently promoted to Double-A Reading in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.  He is the son of Mark Leiter, an eleven-year veteran of the majors between 1999 and 2001.  The elder Leiter pitched for eight big league teams, compiling 65 career wins.  Mark Jr.’s uncle, Al Leiter, was also a major league pitcher.

Mark Jr. calls his father after every start to recap his performance and get the benefit of his father’s experience.
