In a recent spring training game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox, minor-leaguer Tate Matheny was inserted into the lead-off spot of the Red Sox lineup, while his father, Mike Matheny, is the manager of the Cardinals.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora decided to use Tate, so that his father could see him play, something not possible during the regular season. Tate will likely start the season at the Double-A level in the Red Sox organization.
Tate played all nine innings and managed to get in five at-bats, including three walks, a strikeout, and a groundout. He was able to score one of the Red Sox runs in their 9-6 win.
