On July 24, Minnesota Twins 44-year-old pitcher Bartolo Colon faced 22-year-old Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers. What was unique about that situation was that Colon had previously pitched against Cody’s father, Clay, on September 18, 2000. Colon, then with the Cleveland Indians, faced the elder Bellinger, then a 31-year-old infielder with the New York Yankees.
In a somewhat similar situation in baseball history, Boston Red Sox rookie Ted Williams hit a home run off Thornton Lee of the Chicago White Sox on September 17, 1939. In his final major-league season, Williams homered off Thornton’s son, Don, who was pitching for the Washington Senators in the opening game of a twin bill on September 2, 1960.
