Recent Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez was only the second catcher to be voted into Cooperstown in his first year of eligibility, after Johnny Bench.
Now Ivan’s son, Dereck, is following in his father’s footsteps, not as a catcher, but as a pitcher in the Minnesota Twins organization. He spent last season at the Class A levels of the Twins farm system, where he compiled a 5-13 record and 4.48 ERA for two teams. On the surface that performance may not sound impressive; but considering he changed his position from outfielder to pitcher in 2014, Dereck feels he is making strides toward one day getting to the big leagues. Evidence of his promising future is that he was named the Appalachian League’s Pitcher of the Year in 2015.
Ivan was originally drafted out of high school as an outfielder by the Twins in the 6th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. When his offensive production didn’t materialize, he decided to try a different path on the mound.
